We all have a story!

Each of us bears a color, possesses a month, and carries a narrative. My own journey commenced in the latter part of 2002 when my mother got a blood test done. The result came in they found something. The dreaded word no one wants to hear: cancer. I distinctly recall returning home from high school and sitting on the bed as she delivered the news. As time progressed, we did our best to ease the situation. Our first attempts involved surgery and chemotherapy, and we believed we had conquered the battle, but how gravely mistaken we were.

The name of this cancer is one that many patients do not survive beyond a year. My mother tried to make it easier for us by turning it into a game. She distributed colored stickers to all of us kids and said, "If I die, I want..." It turned into a lighthearted game filled with laughter and conversations, with her even including her wishes in her will. However, after some time had passed, we received the devastating news that, after five years, the cancer had returned with a vengeance, affecting a good portion of her middle body.
Now, in the year 2024, we continue to battle this relentless disease that doctors have labeled terminal pancreatic cancer. My sister has taken on the responsibility of shuttling my mother back and forth for her chemotherapy treatments every other week, while I remain at home to care for her dog. I send photos and prepare for the night shift, ensuring that all household chores are taken care of so that my mother and sister can rest. We all have our roles to play.

Cancer doesn't just impact one individual; it affects the entire family. I have never gone out dancing, drinking, or partying, nor have I spent a night away from home, fearing that it might be the day I don't get to see her – my angel, the woman I call mom. She is my foster mother, the one who provided me with a roof over my head and cared for me since I was a chubby two-year-old with a twin. She has given us so much, and I long to give back and do more.
